Site of the Natural World Patrimony
The exceptional environmental conditions of Fernando de Noronha
called the attention of environmental experts of the whole world
and of preservation organisms involved in the struggle for nature
protection.
This interest in the archipelago led the UNESCO to recommend granting
a title, which should acknowledge these special conditions, thus
inscribing the archipelago in the list of places considered as "world
patrimony".
A detailed proposition document was prepared, identifying every
thing that could feature this environmental patrimony and increased
by information concerning the marks of man's presence during the
almost 500 years of interferences. Along the year 2001 not only
the sent documentation was analysed, but also technical visits were
made by specialists, which analysed the conditions "in loco"
and issued a positive concept. Therefore, on December 13, 2001 Fernando
de Noronha was inscribed in the selected group of special recognized
places with the title of "SITE OF THE NATURAL WORLD PATRIMONY".
The corresponding diploma was handed over one year later, on December
27, 2002.
With this honourable title the responsibility of those who live
or visit Fernando de Noronha increases and they assume the liability
of contributing for a rigid preservation, following the established
rules in the "Management Plan" of the National Marine
Reserve of Fernando de Noronha.
